What is residential treatment like?
A typical evening at Beloit goes like this:

2:00 – 3:00
Staff members Holly, John and Tina meet to identify a plan for the shift.

3:00 – 3:45
Holly and John pick up 10 children from the elementary school and return to Beloit.  Holly drives while John supervises the children.

3:45 – 4:15
John and Tina help the kids go through their backpacks and look for homework, get them seated for a snack and start discussing their day.  Holly prepares snacks and at the same time, she is talking with Madison, who is upset about her day at school.  Holly is being nurturing and is remaining calm, while listening and helping Madison process her day.

4:15 – 5:00
Staff transitions Madison and the other children into group therapy hour where staff supervise, redirect and teach a specified curriculum to the kids.

5:00 – 6:00
At the beginning of the shift, staff decided to use today’s recreation time to go outside and play. John plays tag with four children, and Holly plays basketball with the others.  Tina stays inside with the children who didn’t get their homework done.

6:00 – 6:30
The unit goes to the cafeteria for supper, where they are served chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, peas and milk.

6:30 – 7:00
After returning to the unit, Holly assists three children with their evening chores—vacuuming, dusting and mopping.  John prompts two children to gather their shower supplies, and Tina is working one-on-one with nine-year-old Tyler who is becoming escalated because his mom wasn’t available for his scheduled phone call this evening.

7:00 – 8:00
All staff assist with structured activities, like board games, arts and crafts, journaling, reading, etc.

8:00 – 8:30
Time for bed!  Holly, John and Tina tuck the children into bed and provide one-on-one story time or a kid’s choice activity with the children who have had a good day.

8:30 – 11:00
Staff finish unit paperwork, such as communication logs and daily notes, and they debrief with each other about the day
