LSI's HOPES gets grant from Target in Waterloo
Waterloo, Iowa – Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) recently received a $2,000 grant from Target for an early childhood program that helps strengthen families and prevent family violence and child abuse in Black Hawk County.
LSI’s HOPES (Healthy Opportunities for Parents to Experience Success) is a comprehensive in-home visitation program that supports families starting at pregnancy and continuing through preschool.
“With education and support, parents can learn how to build healthy, safe and self-sufficient families,” said Nancy Beenblossom, LSI service coordinator. “Home visitation programs can also help break cycles of family violence and reduce risk factors for child abuse and neglect. We’re excited Target chose to invest in this program that strengthens our community.”
Through the HOPES program, parents learn about child health and development, build stronger parenting skills and receive referrals to important community resources. The grant from Target will help sustain general operations of the program including salaries and mileage for home visits and client assistance.
According to 2008 data from Prevent Child Abuse Iowa, Black Hawk County ranks fifth in the state of Iowa for the rate of unduplicated cases of child abuse.
LSI impacts the lives of tens of thousands of Iowans annually through residential treatment, services to families, home health care, early childhood programs, adoption/foster care services, refugee resettlement, services for people with disabilities, disaster response initiatives and Barnabas Uplift. LSI serves people of all ages, genders, nationalities, religions, ethnicities and sexual orientations and is affiliated with Lutheran Services in America and three Iowa synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
