LSI camp helps children with disabilities have fun in the community
Council Bluffs, Iowa – Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) recently received a $2,500 grant from the Pottawattamie County Community Foundation to offer a day camp for local children with disabilities during the school year and summer.
“It’s not easy for parents of children with disabilities to find appropriate programs for their children,” said Lynn Gray, LSI service coordinator. “The day camp is a great way to introduce kids to fun opportunities here in our community, and it provides parents a break from the daily demands of care giving. It also offers a way for all of us to learn how to include people with disabilities as valued members of our community.”
The camp meets one hour a week during the school year and for five hours a week during the summer. Camp activities have included trips to Skate City, the IMAX Theatre, the Omaha Zoo, the Omaha Children’s Museum, the Omni Theatre, Wilson Pool, Thunderbowl, Lake Namawa Park, Fontenelle Forest, the public library and many other community venues.
The day camp also helps children with disabilities practice social skills, make new friends and learn new leisure skills to enrich their lives.
LSI impacts the lives of tens of thousands of Iowans annually through residential treatment, services to families, home health care, early childhood programs, adoption/foster care services, refugee resettlement, services for people with disabilities, disaster response initiatives and Barnabas Uplift. LSI serves people of all ages, genders, nationalities, religions, ethnicities and sexual orientations and is affiliated with Lutheran Services in America and three Iowa synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
