LSI's Beloit campus gets ready for Blue Sky Day

Ames, Iowa – Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) will hold its 14th annual Blue Sky Day 5K Run/Walk on the Iowa State University campus on Saturday, October 10, at 10:30 a.m.

LSI is aiming to build on last year’s record turnout of over 700 participants who helped raise over $11,000 for programs that benefit local children and families.

For the third year, the Iowa State University Homecoming Committee has planned the race route and will manage it from start to finish with student volunteers.

“Blue Sky Day is a terrific way to make a difference for children and families in our community,” said Belinda Meis, director of Beloit Residential Services. “We’re thankful for everyone in Ames who supports our community by being part of Blue Sky Day. We also want to say thanks to the students of the ISU Homecoming Committee. It’s inspiring to see young people getting involved locally in philanthropy, and their energy, passion and creativity really helps make this event a success.”

In the past Blue Sky Day funds have helped provide car seats for LSI’s crisis child care program, school supplies for children, adaptive bicycles for people with disabilities, opportunities for children to attend a therapeutic horseback riding camp and other necessities for children and families.

LSI’s Ames campus provides programs that benefit more than 4,000 Iowans in Ames and the surrounding communities. LSI’s programs help prevent child abuse, assist families in crisis, support people with disabilities, provide home health care and find foster and adoptive homes for children as a partner agency of Iowa KidsNet.

LSI’s Beloit Residential Treatment Center also cares for up to 60 children ages five to 13 who live on the campus for an average of six to nine months. Through counseling, education and support, the children work through emotional and behavioral issues, often caused by trauma from past abuse or neglect.

LSI impacts the lives of tens of thousands of Iowans annually through residential treatment, services to families, home health care, early childhood programs, adoption/foster care services, refugee resettlement, services for people with disabilities, disaster response initiatives and Barnabas Uplift. LSI serves people of all ages, genders, nationalities, religions, ethnicities and sexual orientations and is affiliated with Lutheran Services in America and three Iowa synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
