LSI's Refugee Program receives ELCA grant

Des Moines, Iowa – Lutheran Services in Iowa’s (LSI) Refugee Program recently received a $3,000 grant from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) to aid refugee families in Des Moines. The ELCA Domestic Hunger Grant will be used to provide rent and utility assistance, in addition to bus tokens, to refugees resettled by LSI.

“Our ultimate goal is help refugee families transition into self-sufficiency as soon as possible after being resettled to the U.S.,” said Jill Stuecker, LSI’s director of refugee services. “Assisting with basic needs is essential as families acclimate to their new lives in the U.S., especially for those who arrive with few resources after fleeing their homelands.”

In 2009, LSI helped resettle approximately 450 refugees, many of whom are coming from Iraq, Burma and Nepal.

As defined by international law, refugees are individuals who have fled their countries because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution based on their race, religion, nationality, political opinion or social group.

LSI’s Refugee Program has ongoing needs for donations of household goods and other items. Visit www.lsiowa.org to learn how to help.

LSI impacts the lives of tens of thousands of Iowans annually through residential treatment, services to families, home health care, early childhood programs, adoption/foster care services, refugee resettlement, services for people with disabilities, disaster response initiatives and Barnabas Uplift. LSI serves people of all ages, genders, nationalities, religions, ethnicities and sexual orientations and is affiliated with Lutheran Services in America and three Iowa synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
