LSI family support worker wins award for going 'above and beyond'

Waterloo, Iowa - Debra Slater of Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) received the Seasons of the Child Award given by the Family and Children’s Council (FCC) of Black Hawk County on Oct. 6. The Seasons of the Child Award recognizes community members who have gone above and beyond during the past year to support the work of the Family and Children’s Council.

“Debra is truly a great family support worker. She is able to empathize and assist clients in their life struggles, is always willing to help others and is a mentor to co-workers,” said Julie Pitzen, Family and Children’s Council executive director. “She is a very dependable employee and works hard at encouraging and supporting families.”

As family support worker for LSI’s early childhood programs, Slater “assists parents in building parenting skills and helps children stay safe from abuse and neglect,” according to Nancy Beenblossom, LSI early childhood service coordinator. LSI’s early childhood programs promote positive parenting, improve child health and development and prevent child abuse and neglect through education, information and support to enhance the emotional, psychological and physical well-being of new parents.

“I am truly honored and feel that there are so many others that deserve this recognition,” said Slater. “I believe we all have a purpose in life. I want to be useful and responsible but most of all compassionate. I want to do something that matters. Most of all it feels good knowing I have made a difference in someone’s life.”

The Family and Children's Council (FCC) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to prevent child abuse and strengthen families. FCC works toward its mission through prevention education programs in the schools, parent education and support for families and training for professionals and community members.

LSI impacts the lives of tens of thousands of Iowans annually through residential treatment, services to families, home health care, early childhood programs, adoption/foster care services, refugee resettlement, services for people with disabilities, disaster response initiatives and Barnabas Uplift. LSI serves people of all ages, genders, nationalities, religions, ethnicities and sexual orientations and is affiliated with Lutheran Services in America and three Iowa synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
