Making Homes for the Holidays

Des Moines, Iowa – Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) is partnering with Slumberland Furniture’s 15th annual “Making Homes for the Holidays” bed giveaway to help give Des Moines children a warm place to sleep this holiday season.

In the Des Moines area, Slumberland Furniture will deliver 44 brand-new bed sets to local children and families on Wednesday, Dec. 9. The beds include a new mattress, box spring and a frame purchased by Slumberland Furniture employee contributions. Each child will also receive a new backpack and books.

The delivery efforts will begin with a program at 9:00 a.m. on Dec. 9 at the Slumberland Furniture Ankeny location on 1208 S. E. 16th Ct. Beds will be loaded at 9:30 a.m. and delivered to each family by late morning. Volunteers from the Knights of Columbus, South Des Moines Chamber of Commerce and LSI will help with the delivery.

Lutheran Services in Iowa is helping Slumberland Furniture identify local children and families who could benefit from this program. LSI helps prevent child abuse in the Des Moines area through early childhood services and programs that help families in crisis.

“Many of the families we support do not have the financial resources to make this kind of purchase on their own, especially in a difficult economy,” said Nancy Krause, LSI’s director of early childhood services. “It’s great to see how local businesses and agencies can partner together to make this a special holiday for these kids."

Slumberland Furniture introduced the “Making Homes for the Holidays” program in 1993. This year more than 1,000 bed sets will be donated to children in ten states.

LSI impacts the lives of tens of thousands of Iowans annually through residential treatment, services to families, home health care, early childhood programs, adoption/foster care services, refugee resettlement, services for people with disabilities, disaster response initiatives and Barnabas Uplift. LSI serves people of all ages, genders, nationalities, religions, ethnicities and sexual orientations and is affiliated with Lutheran Services in America and three Iowa synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
